The Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs solved a murder committed 25 years ago

We continue to share stories about how fingerprint examination is helping solve murders committed a quarter of a century ago.

The spokeswoman for the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Irina Volk, reported that the police, through fingerprint examination, solved a crime committed 25 years ago: a double murder and an attempted murder.

According to Volk, in 2000, a wounded man was found in the entrance of an apartment building on Potapovsky Lane in Moscow. He told the police that an unknown man had come out of one of the apartments and stabbed him. Inside the same apartment, the bodies of two women with multiple stab wounds were later found. The injured man survived.

A criminal case was opened under Article 105 (murder) and Article 30 (attempted murder) of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. The maximum sentence for the murder of two individuals is 20 years in prison.

As Volk said, the crime could not be solved at the time. However, during a recent review of archived case files, officers from the criminal investigation department identified a suspect. He turned out to be a 45-year-old man with a prior criminal record. His involvement was confirmed through fingerprint examination.

The suspect was arrested in Crimea, where he had been living under false documents, trying to evade justice. He is currently in pre-trial detention.
