The suspect, a local resident, confessed to murdering the two women in order to rob them. The crime occurred on November 28, 1998, in an apartment on Yablochkova Street, where the bodies of a 67-year-old woman and her 37-year-old daughter were found with clear signs of strangulation. The apartment was in complete disarray, and money and jewelry were missing.
Despite extensive investigative efforts, the police could not catch the criminal for a long time, and the case was suspended. However, thanks to a renewed investigation and modern forensic technologies, the murderer was finally identified. He turned out to be a previously convicted Astrakhan resident whose fingerprints matched those lifted at the crime scene.
In November 2024, the suspect was arrested. During interrogation, he admitted that he had entered the apartment through a window, strangled both victims, and stolen valuables worth over 170,000 rubles (based on the 1998 exchange rate). Before killing them, he tortured the women, trying to force them to reveal where the money was hidden.
The investigation gathered sufficient evidence, and the criminal case along with the indictment has now been sent to court.
